Alison is a Creative Director, Graphic Designer, Content Producer, and founder of the BEST Collective. She and I met through mutual friends recently and hit it off right away. She's got a super keen sense of style and a pretty great sense of humor, and I'm glad to call her my friend.
Alison recently tapped me for an event that BEST and Local Creative are putting on at The Palms Rockaway on Sunday, September 13th! I'll be there silk-screening your denim with the Girl Gang emblem or some super special custom graphics created JUST for the event.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I draw a LOT of inspiration from the powerful women around me. I am constantly learning from them and feeding off of their energy. Also: RUSSH, my horoscope (hayyy Virgos!), old women and getting myself outside away from the computer.
What’s your special sauce? That little trick you do before walking out the door to perk you up and make you feel your most you?
I do a lot of dancing in my apartment to get the blood flowing. Red lipstick doesn’t hurt either.
Who are your mentors? Who do you look up to?
I am my own mentor.
What makes you happy no matter what? Like if you’re having one of those no good rotten days where everything is terrible, what’s the thing that pulls you off the ledge?
If at all possible I try to go swimming. Being weightless particularly in the ocean helps me put things in perspective. If that’s not an option, a dirty martini and red meat is a close second.
Where do you shop for closet staples?
Where do you go to find your special thing?
What’s your formula for a killer outfit?
Oz Gold tan + breathable fabric + hydration + lip gloss + dirty hair
Tell us a story. What is your earliest memory of making a conscious decision about your style?
One of my birthday parties as a kid was a fashion show where everyone had to model their bathing suits on a catwalk around the pool.
Social media. Who do you love/stalk?
Social media hacks. Hit us. What’s your go-to trick?
What is a social media hack? <insert grandma emoji>
What’s something you struggle with in your career?
I get excited about a lot of things. I get excited about collaborating with a lot of people. Often this leads to taking on projects that swell and bleed into time I like to dedicate to recharging myself in order to do my best, most original work.
Tell us about a time when you hit a breaking point, a fork in the road? Have you ever wanted to quit and run away to Bali?
I always want to run to Bali, regardless of any forks in the road.
There have been a lot of times I have broken. I am extremely lucky to have a support system that has never failed me. When it gets to be too much, I try to remember that everything is temporary, and my best is enough. I cry in the shower and make a box of Amy’s Mac & Cheese, too.
What is something you’d say you are always fighting against? What’s the thing you have to pep-talk yourself about?
I’m not great at finances. I put Splenda in my iced coffee. I don’t love designing web banners. It’s hard to not have a wine at 4PM when I’m on deadline. I’m not proud of looking at every Kardashian sister's Instagram before bed on more than one occasion. Acceptance is key.
What is the skill you picked up as a kid/teen that you still rely on today (i.e. teaching yourself html/powerpoint/etc., getting what you want from mom and dad, making a great sandwich)?
I love writing things down. I keep a paper datebook and write thank you notes. I brainstorm on paper and pay all of my bills by check so I can write out the amount in script.
What are you most proud of in your life? Can be career or non-career related.
I am the most proud of the honesty I bring to any project, personal or professional. I work hard at my relationships, and am proud of the people (and pets - hi Violet!) I associate myself with.
What is the one thing you throw on when you head out the door that gives you that warm glow from deep in the tummy that says, “I know I look good”?
